This recipe is an EASY American classic! Goes great with football and beer…not to mention a little garnish of celery sticks and vegan ranch dressing! Works awesomely as an appetizer or snack food…or you can make the whole recipe for yourself and eat them all if you so choose!

Ingredients

  • 2
Packages of Seitan (usually comes in chunks, like the size of chicken nuggets - thats the size you want for this)
  • 1
    Bottle Frank's Red Hot! Sauce
  • 1/2 Cup
    Vegan butter
  • 2 Cups
    All purpose flour
  • 1 Cup
    Soy cream
  • Salt and pepper
  • 4 Cups
    Vegetable oil (For frying)

Instructions

  1. Basically, the first step will be to make your buffalo sauce. This is extremely easy and takes very little time. All you need to do is pour the contents of your bottle of Red Hot sauce into a sauce pan and put it over low heat. Then, just add your vegan butter and stir it every few minutes as the butter melts. Adding the butter will tone down the spice of the sauce just a bit, but don't worry - its still going to be really spicy. The sauce will be thin, but thats okay, because you will just be tossing the fried seitan in the sauce, so you don't need it to be really thick. If you want it thicker, you can always add a cornstarch slurry. This is done by putting a tablespoon of cornstarch into a bowl and adding about 3 tablespoons of cold water. Stir until all is dissolved into the water. Then you bring the sauce up to a boil, add the slurry, stir and lower the heat. The sauce will thicken up a bit this way. This is totally optional, though...either way works just fine.

  2. Now, you should have your frying oil over high heat and you'll want to let it heat up for about 10 minutes before you start frying. If you have a deep fryer, it should be on high setting and heating up as well. Also, it never hurts to be prepared early, so go ahead and get a bowl and line it with a paper towel or two to soak up the excess oil once you have removed the seitan from the fryer.

  3. Ok, now you're ready to batter the seitan. ou'll need 3 bowls for this: one with flour, one with batter, and one for the battered seitan to rest in before it goes to the fryer. Remove the setian from the packaging and toss it in the flour lightly. Then, fully submerge each piece of seitan in the liquid batter and then toss it in the flour one more time. You are going to get messy doing this, but thats fun, so no big deal. Once you have done this, place the fryer-ready pieces of seitan into the 3rd bowl. Now that everything is ready to fry, using a slotted spoon, lower the seitan (a few pieces at a time, and it never hurts to try a test piece just to make sure the fryer is hot enough) into the oil and let them fry until the batter is crispy and golden brown. Using the slotted spoon again, remove them from the fryer and place them into the bowl you prepared earlier with the paper towels in it. Once you have fried everything, remove the paper towels from the bowl and pour some of the warm buffalo sauce into the bowl with the seitan. Add salt and pepper, toss. Now you're ready to serve them. Goes great with celery sticks and vegan mayo or vegan Ranch for dipping (our recipe for vegan Ranch Dressing is GREAT). And there you have it....warm, crispy buffalo wings that are easy, awesome, and animal free!
